Situated at the mouth of the Solway Firth and at the end of the Eden Valley, Carlisle lies well outside the Yorkshire Dales, but is the northern terminus of the Settle Carlisle Railway (which runs through the heart of the north western dales area).
Nearby attractions include the English Lake District, the Northern Dales and the remnants of the western end of Hadrian's Wall - built by the Romans to divide England from Scotland to the north.
