Overlooked by the impressive precipice of Wild Boar Fell, Mallerstang Common is actually a broad but high mountain valley which sweeps down to Kirkby Stephen and the Eden Valley to the north.
The Settle Carlisle Railway passes through the valley, en route from Garsdale Head to Kirkby Stephen.
Towards the northern end of the valley are the ruins of Pendragon Castle - said to have been the home of Uther Pendragon (the father of King Arthur in English Arthurian legend)...
