Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle is a market town which sits aside the River Tees in Teesdale.

Attractions in the town include the castle (from which the town takes its name), and the magnificent Bowes Museum.

Charles Dickens stayed in Barnard Castle while researching "Nicholas Nickleby" over the course of the winter of 1837-38, and it is believed that the Bowes Academy at nearby Bowes may have provided at least some of the inspiration for "Dotheboys' School".

Places to visit nearby include High Force and Low Force in Teesdale.
