Bruntscar Cave

Somewhat unusually situated behind a ruined barn in Chapel le Dale on the southern flanks of Whernside, Bruntscar Cave was discovered by a certain Mr Kidd in 1865. The story goes that the owner of the adjacent Bruntscar Farm had been curious about the sound of running water which could be heard in the barn, and this led Mr Kidd to break an entrance through the rock face at the rear of the barn in to a vadose stream passageway which lay behind.

For a time Brunstscar was open to members of the public as a show cave, though given its remote location up near the end of the Chapel le Dale valley and tendency to flood this development turned out not to be a viable business venture.
