The Kilnsey Show

The Kilnsey Show is a famous annual agricultural show which is held at the village of Kilnsey in the heart of Upper Wharfedale.
The event usually takes place on the Tuesday after the late August Bank Holiday weekend, with the main areha laid out in fields immediately adjacent to Kilnsey village, with the spectacular limestone cliffs of Kilnsey Crag providing an impressive backdrop (pictured above).
Besides the traditional displays of livestock (including cattle, sheep and goats) the event usually includes exhibitions of birds of prey, falconry, horse jumping, dry stone walling competitions (pictured above), sheep dog trials and herding etc.
One of the highlights of the day is the fell running race up a steep grassy slope and screes to the top of Kilnsey Crag, with participants then having to negotiate the infamous "Chimney" (a narrow limestone gully which requires a rock scramble down the cliff with the aid of a rope) and more screes on the descent!
The day usually ends with horse and trap racing in the main arena (pictured above), and a sheep shearing contest which carries on in the evening in a separate marquee.
