The Settle Carlisle Railway celebrates 150 years of passenger service

Having originally opened for passenger travel on 1st May 1876, the world famous Settle Carlisle Railway has now been providing services to the general public for 150 years.

The line actually opened in August 1875, but the introduction of passenger services the following year meant that members of the public could now travel the route, taking in the spectacular scenery for which the line is now so well known.

In 1963 the line was labelled uneconomic (but not actually earmarked for immediate closure) by Dr. Beeching in his controversial review and report in to the future of the railways, and it was later scheduled to be shut down in the 1980s.

Fortunately a band of campaigning groups and individuals advocated for the line's survival, with an announcement of its reprieve being made by the government in 1989. Since then many more passengers will have travelled on the railway, which it is hoped will still be operating in another 150 years' time.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary a range of special events have been planned to take place on the railway throughout the course of 2026.
