Thomas Chippendale (the English cabinet maker), was born in Otley (at the very southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales) near Leeds in 1718. A contemporary of Robert Adam, Chippendale's name is now synonymous with the finest english period furniture making. A collection of his works can be seen at nearby Harewood House.
