The infant River Wharfe rises on the moors of Langstrothdale Chase and passes down a steep sided valley which is known as Langstrothdale, and which then feeds in to Wharfedale at the confluence with Cray Beck near Buckden.

Hamlets in the dale include Hubberholme with its Norman church, and Yockenthwaite, near where there is a prehistoric stone circle.
