The infant River Wharfe rises on the moors of Langstrothdale Chase and passes down a deep cut valley which is known as Langstrothdale, and which then feeds in to Upper Wharfedale at the confluence with Cray Beck and Cray Gill near Buckden.

Hamlets in the dale include Hubberholme with its Norman church, and Yockenthwaite, near where there is a prehistoric stone circle.

Other hamlets in the dale include Beckermonds and Oughtershaw - from where a steep road climbs out of the valley and over Fleet Moss in to Sleddale.
